This position will be part of the Pharmaceutical Candidate Optimization (PCO) within the Discovery Research organization located in Lawrenceville, NJ. The PCO organization is an integrated function with responsibility for characterizing nonclinical safety, DMPK and early CMC properties of lead candidates to identify and solve issues, guiding project teams in the discovery of high quality drug candidates and enable their clinical development and successful marketing authorizations across the globe.
We are seeking a collaborative, self-motivated and results oriented scientist with a passion for problem solving to extend and enhance patient's lives, with a focus on understanding lead candidate developability and liabilities. The successful candidate excels in a fast-paced, collaborative, cross functional, matrix team environment to enable the candidate nomination and progression for biologics, and emerging modalities such as, but not limited to, antibody-drug conjugates, gene therapies, oligonucleotides, etc. The scientist will conduct studies to define and understand biophysical, chemical and preformulation properties using a wide variety of analytical characterization tools to work directly with teams to guide the discovery and identification of next generation therapies.

Job Responsibilities
- Ability to carry out biophysical characterization and preformulation studies on potential new biologic candidates, with the purpose to define their developability and liability profiles.
- Provide experimental and computational input to protein discovery scientists during design and screening of new biologics entities and enable drug design from lead optimization to the point of candidate identification, characterization and selection.
- Assist in the design and development of formulations suitable for use in drug discovery pharmacology studies, PK studies and initial exploratory toxicology studies.
- Participate in driving the strategic direction of the Discovery Pharmaceutics & Analytical Sciences group to further its ability to act as a problem solving entity for biologics discovery teams and provide seamless transfer of candidates to development.
- Help advance the abilities of the larger preclinical optimization organization to develop expertise in scientific areas which can enhance our understanding of the role of biophysical properties in the overall biopharmacetuical performance of proteins, antibodies and other large molecules.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's with 5+ years of Academic or Industry experience
OR
Master's Degree with 3+ years of Academia or Industry experience
OR
PhD
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. with 0-2 years of experience or MS with 3+ years of experience with degree in Pharmaceutics, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering or related disciplines
Knowledge of basic protein chemistry and biopharmaceutical principles as they apply to drug discovery and drug delivery of proteins, antibodies and other large molecules.
Understanding of biophysical properties and analytical methods used for characterization of proteins and other large molecules and how they relate to the biologics' in vivo delivery and disposition.
Strong understanding of preformulation aspects for proteins, antibodies and other large molecules is necessary along with ability to guide the generation and interpretation of preformulation data as it relates to the overall discovery process.
Good written and verbal communication skills are a must.
Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrating effectiveness as a team player on multidisciplinary teams resourced in a flexible and global environment is required.
The ability to think innovatively and reduce such thinking to practical implementation is desired.
Knowledge on use of computers and databases for data collection, compilation, analysis and information dissemination is a must.
