Position Summary

Alexander S. Hatoum, Ph.D. is a Principle Investigator at the Washington University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Hatoum's research is focused on delineating the genetic and environmental factors that contribute to the development of substance use disorders, delineating biotypes of substance use disorders, and discovering novel treatment pathways for future therapies. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that is exploring important research questions about substance use disorder heterogeneity.


We are seeking a motivated scientific writer (in-person in St. Louis or remote from within the U.S.) with publication experience in the genetic and environmental factors influencing substance use. We would welcome applications from scholars with expertise in psychiatric or statistical genetics, pain research, psychology, sociology, computer science, or related disciplines. This is a two-year position, with the possibility of a one-year extension.


As a scientific writer (in-person in St. Louis or remote), you will be a core member of our growing research team. The overall goal of this position is threefold: using supervised and semi-supervised machine learning algorithms on large datasets (genetics or text data) to find biotypes of disorders; conducting GWAS of derived phenotypes; and identifying pharmacological targets for discovered genome-wide loci.


There will be opportunities to receive training in communicating results from statistical genetics or machine learning methods; Emphasis will be on individualized career development of the individual as a scientific writer and communicator. We are a highly collaborative and, office space, grand rounds and seminars at the Washington University School of Medicine, and world-class clinical and translational research being performed at the Washington University.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Grant Preparation/Writing (Including Research Sections)

  • Assists the Endowed Chair and collaborators with the development of scientific and administrative sections of grants.

Advanced Data Analysis

  • Responsible for independent data analysis of advanced research topics to be presented to the Endowed Chair and collaborators.

Designs/Develops Clinical Trials within the Lymphoma Research Team

  • Assists the Endowed Chair and collaborators in the design and development of new investigator-initiated clinical trials.

Preparation/Writing of Research Abstracts and Journal Articles

  • Assists the Endowed Chair and collaborators with drafting, writing, editing and galley-proofing of abstracts and articles for publication.

Performs other duties as assigned.
